Good old southern comfort/soul food. What a find this place is, tucked away in a little nondescript strip center at 34th and 22nd Aves in South St. Pete. We had chicken and waffles, which were freshly made to order and sides of collard greens and yams. Everything we ate was delish. The owner was friendly and answered all of our questions. Congrats on a job well done!

5 stars easy. Everything was made fresh to order. Even the chicken was breaded right in front of us. We had chicken & waffles and a side of collard greens. And it was amazingly good! Didn't take long to get our food either. Maybe 6 or 7 minutes. But we were the only ones there at 11am. Super-friendly service too. I can't wait to go back to this little St. Pete gem.

Absolutely, hands down, the best fried chicken I have ever had, and I've had my fair share of fried chicken. It's one of my favorite things to eat. Also, by far, the best waffles I've ever had. They have an amazing flavor. I've tried every side, and all of them are phenomenal. Especially the mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm talking fresh, REAL potatoes, and what can only be described as pan gravy that's better than your grandma could ever hope to make. I happily make the 40-45 minute drive every other week, either for a carry out, or to dine in with the hubster on the weekend. We found this little slice of heaven on yelp, and decided to give it a try after reading the reviews and seeing the pics. Let me tell you, neither the pics, nor the stellar reviews even begin to touch on how freaking DELICIOUS this food is. Home cooked, and the chicken and the waffles are both made to order. And the sweet tea?? Omg... I don't know what they do, but... I know I keep saying this, but it the best I've ever had. You will have to wait 20 minutes to get your food, but it is so worth it. I would gladly wait for an hour. Go here. Go now. You're welcome.

Small and unassuming but SOOOO DELICIOUS!!! This was a last minute change of plans but I'm so glad. We had Rush Hour Chicken & Waffles & the Smothered Chicken and everything was delicious!!! I've had several Chicken and Waffles and this was by far the best! The service was great too!

Very disappointed that I can't give a review today as I was so looking to have a meal here with two out-of-town business colleagues. The problem was Rush Hour was not open during their Menu stated, WINDOW posted hours of operation of 8am - 7pm. It was 0845 when I was at the door. I checked the FACEBOOK page and the menu there is the same one posted on the door--at least it has the correct phone number. I did raise a member of the staff who came to the door and politely told me that they would be open at 1030 today. However, they have scratched the opening times off their work week times on the door--but their menu is still 0800 posted in the window next to the door as it is on the YELP site. So, I am not sure if 1030 is the true time of opening to report or not. Not a good way to do restaurant business NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE FOOD is.... I may be back but I will call every time now as I have no confidence that they will be open. Total shame that I am the first one to give it less than 4-5 stars but maintaining posted hours of operation is a fundamental business practice. And, scratching the opening time off the door even makes it worse. Undisciplined Hours of Operation speak to a lackadaisical attitude toward service and disrespect to the customer base. I am giving it one-star only because I can't abstain from rating.

Best Fried Chicken I've ever had!!! I ordered the Chicken & waffles and it was legit! You gotta wait a little bit of time for the chicken to cook as they cook it to order, but once you get it... It's well worth the wait! Great seasoning! Perfectly golden brown & delicious!

Great food! Great service! Chicken was scalded to perfection and the fried corn was delicious. We will for sure be back!

Great food in a little plaza. We almost over-looked it, but I'm glad we didn't. My friend got chicken and waffles. I didn't want that because the chicken was on the bone and I like to make chicken and waffle sandwiches. She said it was awesome though. I didn't taste it, I was saving every bit of room in my belly for my own grub. We got fried green tomatoes to share and I had the smothered chicken with collards and Mac n cheese. Everything was awesome. I almost cleaned my plate despite how incredibly full I was. I will definitely be back next time I'm in the area.

Best local chicken and waffles. The menu has turkey based sausages instead of pork, which I found to be a better option. Process are fair for fresh food. Staff is helpful and friendly. Their punch is delicious I'd you like tons of sugar; )

This place is now on my top 5 list of best places to get fried chicken. Perfectly spiced and expertly fried. Get the 3 piece dark (Tre'von) with 2 sides and a corn bread muffin, and add an extra breast piece. Enough food to feed me for 2 or 3 days. The sides. I have only had the mac n' cheese and collard greens. Both very, very good. Collards are cooked with turkey legs. Chicken wings. Again, perfect breading on these bad boys and fried to perfection. As others have noted, one wing here ='s the drummie and the flap. The way it SHOULD BE, but usually never is. And the wings are BIG too. The best part is their price: 20 pieces (which equals 40 pieces anywhere else) for only $13.75. A fantastic deal. Really looking forward to a return visit so I can try some additional sides and/or menu items.

TL;DR - Solid chicken and waffles but restaurant could be cleaner I love eating breakfast foods during other times other than breakfast. I also love fried chicken. So getting lunch at Rush Hour was an easy choice to make as I was driving around St. Pete looking for a place to eat. I'm not gonna go as far to say that the chicken tastes just like Publix fried chicken but its pretty damn close. I think when they snuck into Publix HQ to steal the secret recipe, I think they only managed to tear out part of the page from the cook book because although it's seasoned well and tastes good, it ain't Publix good. With the R.H. Chicken and Waffles, you get 3 huge pieces of these juicy wings with a big ol' waffle to slather with butter and syrup - all for under 10 bucks. Everything is made fresh to order. As soon as you say the word, they drop the wings into the deep fryer 10 feet away from you. Unfortunately, that's their down fall and what's keeping me from giving a higher rating. The restaurant is not well ventilated and it shows. The sneeze guards are caked in grease and you come out smelling and feeling like it too. Definitely not a place to go eat before a night out on the town unless you're already wearing something from KFC's line of cologne. 4 stars: I'll be back for lunch if I'm ever in the area.

For starters this restaurant is located in a small strip mall not to far from Gibbs HS. The place is very clean and not outdated. We actually recognized the owner from seeing him on TV or in the newspaper a few years back. We only tried the chicken and waffles. The chicken was seasoned perfectly just like my grandmother's. Our waffle was not to heavy and was just right. This place will be a repeat. We wanted to give it 4.5 but can't figure out how to. We are anticipating give it five stars once we try some of their other dishes!

  • Karen T.

Excellent chicken and waffles! The owner was courteous and respectful, something to treasure in today's fast paced society. The chicken was breaded and fried and served to my table piping hot! Definitely a place to feed body and soul!

  • Denisha O.

This place does not get one star because the food isn't good. I'm sure if I tried it it may have been awesome! I have been here twice in two days and still have not tried anything off of this menu. The first time they had the hours wrong on Yelp and the restaurant was already closed when I got here. The second day I came a little earlier and just a simply asked for a paper menu so I can make my selection as soon as they opened within the next couple of minutes and I was greeted with a nasty condescending attitude. Customer Service is everything to me because I can cook at the house! I don't make money to spend it in places where it's not welcome or I'm not welcome so never will I come back to this establishment THE END!!!

Chicken & Waffles may be the last meal I ask for if I ever found myself in that predicament. There is just something, a special flavor that is developed from deep fried chicken, buttercream, maple syrup (or pancake syrup), and waffles. I don't know what it is, but either you get it or you don't. This is the type of meal that has no in between, and you cannot pretend to like it. Rush Hour sits on a strip mall, on a street that is busy and quiet at the same time, at the corner of 22nd and Highway 19. Being really close to I-275, it is a great place to drive to and pick up some take out. I may have said this previously, I am not a fan of "chicken wings" & waffles, which is the type of chicken & waffles served here, because I like the variety of white and dark meat. Rush Hour, however, may be the exception to that rule. Here, the chicken wings are lightly breaded and they taste nice and clean. They are fried perfectly and come to the table soft, juicy, and with lots of flavor. Spicy sauce at the table complements the chicken portion of this dish. The waffle, the second part of this dish, comes itself in a different plate and is not to be ignored either. It is not a side or just a waffle. This waffle is big, crunchy, meaty, tasty, and the syrup on top make it plain delicious. Add an iced tea and you may be deep in the South without leaving Florida. After reading the stellar reviews, I made a point to stop by, and I can say that I was very satisfied. The only time I stopped by I also ordered a chicken leg, just to add variety. Needless to say, it was also perfectly cooked. In conjunction, put together, these chicken & waffles are very good. The portion is very generous and I could hardly finish the food, but I did. The lady in charge was also very charming and helpful and she made sure I had everything I needed to enjoy my visit. To put it simply, this is definitively a repeat.

I thought I had eaten fried chicken before. After eating it here, I was obviously wrong. I love my mother, but I blame her for my first chicken that she had fried. The fried chicken was so good at Rush Hour I felt like I was having a religious experience. The seasoning, juices, size, skin, was all perfect and was a 6 napkin meal. Paired with the sweet and ample waffle, the experience was overwhelming in the best way. My husband was without words the whole time we ate, just made sounds. The service was excellent. We can only hope they open one in Tampa.

I called 3 times to place a to-go order and was told they were busy and was put on hold. Each time I held for 15 minutes, that's 45 minutes on hold. This place missed out on a sale from 3 people in an office that eat out a lot at lunchtime. We won't be trying this place. Apparently they don't need the business.

I had to create a yelp account just to share this amazing spot. I've had a lot of fried chicken and this was just incomparable. The waffle and the chicken was AMAZING. Chicken was so seasoned and juicy. The fried corn and rice and gravy was delicious as well. The side are truly unnecessary due to the very generous portions. There are a lot of other items I look forward to trying ! Overall really great service. We left nothing but the plate and bones. Already planning to return. Would highly recommend. You think you know chicken and waffles ? You don't until you tried rush hour. Can't say enough about how amazing this place was. A must try!

  • Eddie V.

I love fried chicken . I have had it a million times in my life and I will have it a million more before I die . That being said , I have never had chicken like this before . Juicy , seasoned , freshly made and meaty wings . There was nothing I did not like about my experience . Prices were very reasonable but they could charge 20 for 5 wings and having tasted it , i would pay whatever they want. The waffle itself was amazing , rice and gravy side along with fried corn sides were simple but tastefully done and just all components of the meal played off each other . They have sauces for the chicken , but it is unnecessary . I love hot sauce so naturally i used it , but it even without it , the food was amazing on its own . This restaurant is a must try if you ever find yourself within a 20 mile radius of it .

This is probably the only placed that I would order fried chicken. Never was a fan of fried chicken before I went to this place because the other places that I've been too always have the batter too thick. Yes, we'll definitely have to come back here for more fried chicken.

Finally, a place serving proper fried chicken! I ordered fried chicken breast while my husband opted for fried bone-in dark meat (Tre'von's special). I have to say the breast wasn't that great...it was a little dry and needed gravy or something to add moisture. That being said, my husbands more "traditional" style chicken was out of this world! Of course, we also tried some sides. The Mac & Cheese was awesome, as was the Squash Casserole. Next time...Chicken & Waffles!

Out of highly esteemed waffle places, I've had both Rosco's in LA and Gladys Knight's in Atlanta. Being that I now live in Atlanta, what I'm about t say might be blasphemy but it's the truth: Rush Hours beats both of them, hands down. I don't eat fried or junk food often, so my palette isn't muddled. I can actually taste food and Rush Hour's taste beats both of the more famous places I mentioned. The chicken (unlike Gladys') is seasoned. You can look at it and see the seasoning. It's fried up crisply, but not dried out. The waffle is crispy on the edges and fluffy on the inside. I can rarely finish pancake (grain or otherwise) when I eat out, but I finish Rush Hour's. It's just that good. If chicken and waffles is what you're craving, this is the place to go. Both the food and service are good. As a matter of fact when I go back for a visit next week, I'm gonna make it a point to visit them on my cheat day. PS- the catfish nuggets are great!

The food (especially the chicken) was absolutely delicious! It tasted like something from your Grandma's house. I'm really excited to see this black-owned business thriving in my hometown of St. Petersburg! It is truly a gem.

Recently I reviewed Willie Mae's Scotch House NOLA...with many accolades...and a James Beard award. Rush Hour Chicken & Waffles wins this competition hands down IMO. The caveat is, will they deliver consistently. My guess is...they will. The chicken was cooked to order (which means...if you're in a hurry...go somewhere else)...but if you want HOT fresh cooked to order QUALITY...and the sides...PERFECTLY seasoned. Obviously, I'm a fan. Try it...and post your reviews...let's compare notes. But so far, for me...this is the best fried chicken I've found in the county. This is the real deal... the commercial hood was spotless (no dripping grease)...the kitchen open for viewing...this is a place that understands ServSafe certification, and complies with it. (Ok...I actually did not check their Health Dept checks online - so if there are issues - someone can respond...but I can't imagine there are).

Just happened to be in the area and decided to drop in. The wings were expertly breaded & divinely crispy. The collard greens were probably the best I've ever had & that is saying something since I usually stay away from green things. If you are shopping for a local joint with character, please give this place a try. The locals are clearly fans, as take-out orders keep streaming out the door...

My luck with food (especially good southern cooking) suffers everytime I'm in the Bay Area. Well, I am thrilled to say that Rush Hour Chicken & Waffles finally broke my curse! Real sweet tea, flavorful chicken (expertly fried). A great tasting waffle. These are what I've prayed for and finally those prayers were answered. Rush Hour is nestled in a small strip mall at 34th-South (hwy19) & 22nd-South, in St. Pete, a quick jump off I-275. The staff are very friendly and the food is cooked fresh-to-order. So if you're expecting McD's speed, go there instead. But if you're willing to wait 10-15mins for outstanding soul food, you'll be rewarded with just that! Rush Hour will be my go-to spot where I'm in town from now on.

OH MY GOD . . . SO good. Ok this place is a little out of the way but SO worth the trip. I was down doing some banking at the credit union next door and decided to slide it. It's AWESOME. I had the chicken wings. Two things know: first they way count wings includes the drumette part and the flappity flappity part. So multiply the number of wings your're ordering by two to get a Hooters equivalent number of wings and second they're BIG so allow for that, so 5 wings there is like 15 anywhere else. Oh and so tasty LIGHTLY breaded then coated in sauce. The sauce was good but next time I'll get in on the side. By the time I was done my napkin had been totally overwhelmed and I needed to duck into the bathroom to wash my face and hands. The wings were nice and crispy on the outside, not overly breaded like Hooters but not naked like Winghouse and the meat was tender and juicy. Everything a chicken wing should be. I also had black eyes peas which were also good normally I'm not the biggest black eyed pea fan in the world (tastes like . . dirt) but I liked these (probably had bacon in them). It's a local place not a chain and the owner's story is downright inspiring so yeah go check them out.

  • Michael Z.

Really good chicken and waffles. The chicken wings were fried perfectly with a light, crispy exterior and juicy inside. The seasoning was subtle but enjoyable when devouring an entire plate full of food. The waffle itself was pretty spot-on as well. Overall, a not-too-heavy, balanced dish that kept you coming back for more. Looking forward to eating here again in the future.

Watch out Roscoes! The West Coast staple in Chicken & Waffles has finally a worthy contender in Burg! The inspiring chef and entrepreneur behind this yummy classic has delivered a fantastic recipe that is sure to satisfy all who venture to this "house of soul". This place has it all on the sides like Mac&cheese, blacked eye Peas and so much more. The best part is it's not salty like all other soul food joints. This guy is the real deal. Be sure to put it in your mouth real soon! Even my kids love it!

Man, where do I even begin. I drove down to St. Pete, from Wesley Chapel, just to cure my curiosity after reading some REALLY GOOD reviews about these Chicken & Waffles. One review said they were BETTER than Glady's & Roscoes......... WHAT!!!!! Guess what folks, it's freakin' TRUE. After having the pleasure of meeting Mr. Towan Rush & tasting his "New Champ" Chicken & Waffles. I felt like paying him for the gas I spent to drive down there. It was a total blessing eating something so tasty & delicious. The trip was so well worth it, I was planning my return before I finished my meal. The place has a real southern, laid back vibe, with a southern hospitality all female cooking crew ( Mama-nem) throwing down in the kitchen. In addition to the Chicken & Waffles, we also ordered the Trevon (3 piece fried chicken dinner, with choice of 2 sides). That was also OFFICIAL!!!!!! The chicken was "Slap ya Mama........Yeah Boyeeeee" Good. The sides were crispy, golden, well seasoned French Fries & fried corn (Yep, that's what I said...... Freakin' Southwestern style Fried Corn). Don't forget their sweet-N-spicy dipping sauce ( nectar of the Gods). I gotta go back to try the ENTIRE menu. So if you're in the mood for some real good Soul food, without the HYPE, come check out Towan & Crew at Rush Hour Chicken & Waffles.

My wife & I called to make sure they were open on Saturday, because Yelp! has them closed on Saturdays. Read about in the Tampa Bay Times & decided to give it a try (as I think I am a connoisseur of southern/soul food). This place was awesome, more food than you would think. Come hungry! I had the Rush-Hour Chicken Waffles w/a side of grits + cheese. My wife had the Tre'Von's special (3 pieces fried chicken) w/Collard greens + black eyed peas. Chaundra (our server) was very friendly, helpful & patient (as I took a long time to figure out what to eat, because there are so many good choices - Shrimp + Grits will be the next visit). We will definitely be back!

For years we have been on a quest to find the perfect fried chicken wing. We may keep sampling just to keep our taste buds sharp but really there is no need to go further. The chicken wings here are excellent. We have been visiting Rush Hour about once a week for the past month. We always get the wings, which are genuine Southern fried. Huge, not overly breaded, not greasy, just moist and delicious. We have also tried the Smothered Chicken which is a boneless fried chicken breast with gravy over rice. The gravy has a wonderful rich flavor and isn't real thick and "gloopy". Just perfect over the chicken and rice. We've had sides of collards, green beans and house potatoes. All good, we favor the green beans. The fried corn sounds good but husband isn't crazy about jalapeños, so we haven't tried it yet. Next up for me will be the chicken and waffles and the squash casserole. Just as a side note, the folks here are super nice, friendly and really strive to please. We plan on continuing to visit often.

The real deal if you want chicken and waffles. The wait time is less than rush hour - it takes awhile to cook homemade food, but it is soooo worth it. We will go back! The zucchini side dish is magnificent!

Unbelievable wings and waffles! The best I've ever had! I love the batter, light and crispy. All food is cooked fresh to order. Excellent service and the place is very clean. I live in Boston and I wish we had a Rush Hour up here. This is a must visit!

Out of towners looking for a soul food spot on a Sunday afternoon....found this lil gem on Yelp and it did NOT disappoint. I had the fried chicken wings, mac & cheese & collard greens and it was so perfectly prepared & seasoned that I didn't need to add any hot sauce or salt & pepper at the table. My friend had the smothered chicken and he loved it. The food was fresh fresh fresh, chicken was fried while we waited and the service was attentive and sincere. I just moved to Tampa and I will absolutely drive over to St. Pete for this food!

We ate here yesterday and thought the food and service were both excellent! This was by far some of the best fried chicken we have had! The breading was light, seasoned perfectly, and cooked to a crisp, golden brown. It was definitely worth the stop! If we are ever back in the area we will be stopping again!

Went for lunch with a co-worker. They make everything fresh so make sure you have an extra 15 minutes after you order for them to prepare it. We both ordered the chicken N Waffles and had a sweet tea. The flavor of the waffle was amazing and you can tell it was not made from the carton mix. The chicken was good, a little greasy for my tastes but it was seasoned well. With both enjoyed the food & service and will return to try the catfish.

A hidden gem. The place is in a strip mall next to a nail salon. I went there for breakfast. The chicken and waffles were excellent. And so was of the service. They have a full variety of soul food items . The place is very clean and the people are friendly. Plan to go back tonight for dinner.

The best fried chicken that I can remember having in a long time, if not ever! Everything was super delicious--chicken and waffles were heaven, mac and cheese was savory and flavorful, and mashed potatoes were great too. So glad that this place exists, can't wait to go back for more yum.

This places gets one star because I haven't actually had the pelasure of trying the food. We went, sat down and when we went to order, everything we wanted from appetizer to main was unavailable. How do you not have anything but chicken wings in a chicken joint? We wound up walking out. You can't run out of basic menu items before dinner service!
